Novitell

Technical Overview

The Novitell solution consists of two main components, the Novitell Dual Mode Client (DMC) software that is installed on the mobile phone and the Novitell Dual Mode Server (DMS) which is typically installed next to the softswitch. The server performs as a standard SIP back-to-back user agent (B2BUA) and as such no integration work is required. The server is installed with an administration system that among others does Over The Air (OTA) provisioning of the DMCs.

The graphical setup on the right is an IP Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) that runs a SIP based softswitch that is surrounded by Session Border Controllers (SBC). The Novitell DMS connects to the Softswitch as a SIP Back to Back user Agent (B2BUA) providing an open and well defined standard interface to the softswitch. The ITSP is connected to the PSTN via one or more Media Gateways.

The DMC part of the mobile phone is connected via IP to the softswitch as a SIP User Agent while the cell part of the mobile phone is connected as a regular mobile phone via GSM, 3G or CDMA to the cellular network. When the DMC is in a qualified Wifi network, calls to and from the DMC are made via IP using the SIP client on the DMC. If, during a call, the DMC is moved out of qualified Wifi coverage, automatic handover to the cellular network is performed. When the DMC is not in a qualified Wifi network, calls are made via the regular mobile phone. If the DMC comes within a qualified Wifi network during a call, handover is performed to the Wifi network. In summary, calls are automatically routed via Wifi/IP whenever possible.
